Garmin Bought TrainingPeaks. Now What?

Garmin announced this week that it's acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic. Garmin hasn't said much else. The press release is thin on details, so I've got some thoughts about what this could mean.

I started using TrainingPeaks back in 2006, after getting recruited to race on a competitive men's cycling team. My coach at the time was Andy Applegate, a CTS coach who built all my workouts in TrainingPeaks. I stopped using it once I stopped racing, but my training history, race notes, results, and coaching plans are all still sitting in there. Years of it.

Worst case: Garmin absorbs TrainingPeaks' features and paywalls them. Existing users lose access to that history — workout data, race notes, coaching plans, all of it — unless they pay up or migrate somewhere else in time.

That's the scenario that worries me. TrainingPeaks has been the de facto platform for coaches and athletes for a couple decades now. A lot of people have exactly what I have sitting in there: a long, unglamorous record of the work someone else designed for them. I'd hate to lose mine.
