Migrating Things to Todoist

May 14, 2026

The other day I wrote in my notes:

I'm contemplating migrating my task manager to the free version of Todoist. I'm speculating that Things 4 may be released soon, and I'm hesitant to pay an upgrade fee for three devices or a subscription if they adopt that model. Additionally, Todoist currently offers more features.

Once I started the migration, I looked for a way to export my tasks from Things so I could import them into Todoist. The bottom line is there’s no easy way to export your data from Things. That meant I would have to manually recreate everything, which I really didn’t want to do.

Eventually I found a solution that mostly worked.

I discovered Todoist’s Add multiple tasks feature. It can turn a pasted list into individual tasks automatically.

What I ended up doing was selecting all the tasks in a Things project, copying them, and pasting them into Todoist. Todoist turned each line into a separate task and even preserved the due dates. The only manual work left was copying over notes attached to tasks.

In the end, it was surprisingly close to having a real import feature.

For now I’m running both apps in parallel, but I’m reasonably sure I’ll stick with Todoist. The free version offers everything I need for my fairly simple task management requirements.
